Port Iljichevsk to increase container throughput to 3.2 million TEU within five years

Container throughput of Iljichevsk port (Ukraine) may increase to 3.2 million TEU within the nearest 4-5 years, PortNews IAA learnt from Oleg Fotchenko, deputy head of Iljichevsk port. The largest volumes of container transshipment are handled by Ukrtranscontainer (established by National Container Company) at berths No 3-6. In 2007, Ukrtranscontainer handled 455,976 TEU. Besides some 100,000 TEU delivered to the port by CMA CGM service were handled at berths No 1-2. According to Oleg Fotchenko, the berths No 1-6 will be capable of handling up to 2.2 million TEU per year when berth No is upgraded. Besides, two new container terminals are to be built in the port: 850,000-TEU terminal is to be built at the berth No 22 and 150,000-TEU terminal will appear at the territory of the existing multimodal terminal. Oleg Fotchenko also noted that large global operators would participate in the project having not revealed the names of the companies. The port’s advantage for the development of container business is its ability to handle ocean-going vessels (container carriers with the capacity of up to 8,000 TEU). According to the development plan of National Container Company, Ukrtranscontainer is to increase its capacity to 4 million TEU by 2020.
