Coastal ports in Shandong province altogether handled 156.9 million tons in the first quarter of this year, a year-on-year increase of 14.28 per cent, Xinhua reported.
Before Rizhao and Qingdao started a joint container terminal, Rizhao port's container business developed slowly with a total throughput of only 250,000 TEU in 2006. But container volume record of the port was updated again and again since its cooperation with Qingdao port in May of 2007.
In the first quarter of this year, Rizhao port handled 149,500 TEU, a strong growth of 83 per cent year on year.
Besides, Rizhao port also cooperated with Linyi, an inland city in Shandong, recently to set up a joint container depot, making Linyi an "inland port". The same facilities have also been established in other inland cities including Weifang and Jining.
