Igor Levitin: To ensure transport security, Russia needs to 7,8bn rubles

Russia would have to spend 7,8 billion rubles to ensure security level in transport sector in 2010. In 2014, this amount may reach 45 billion rubles, BFM agency reports quoting the Russian Minister of Transport Igor Levitin. A significant volume of funds will be transferred to the North Caucasus federal district.

The minister explained that the measures, in particular, involve the use of surveillance cameras. "This is video cameras and panic buttons on the buses that we could see and know what’s going in the bus. All of this will be done using the GLONASS system," the Minister said.

In March 2010, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree "On creation of an integrated system of public safety in transport”. President Medvedev ordered in his decree to have the security system developed by January 1, 2014.

The security issue on the railways and the subway rose after the recent suicide-bomber attacks in the Moscow subway in March this year and explosion of Nevsky Express in November 2009.

GLONASS equipment will be generally used in Russia from 2011. The experimental receivers for that satellite navigation system will be ready for use before the end of 2010, Vladimir Yevtushenkov, the Sistema Board Chairman promised during his meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
