Russia’s ban on export of wheat is effective Aug.15 - Dec.31, 2010

The Russian Government has imposed a temporary ban on exports of grain crops and other agriproducts to be effective from August 15th to December 31st, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said today at the Govt. meeting.

"In connection with abnormally high temperatures and drought, I consider it expedient to impose a temporary ban on exports from the territory of the Russian Federation, grain and other agricultural products derived from grain, Russ. Govt.’s press service quoted Mr. Putin as saying.

"We do have enough reserves - 9.5 million tons. But we need to prevent the price growth on food in the Russian Federation, it is necessary to keep livestock and to create reserves for the next year,” Mr. Putin said, adding the ban would be temporary.

Vladimir Putin instructed the Ministry of Agriculture, other government agencies to act in accordance with the agreement signed today by the government decree.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Agriculture officials have said there was no reason for any grain export restrictions, assuring that this year Russia is ready to supply to the foreign markets around 21.5 million tons of grain. At the same time, the Ministry of Agriculture has lowered the forecast on this year’s crop to 70-75 million tons of grain.
