Hyundai Heavy and Maersk team up for liquefied CO2 carrier project

Hyundai Heavy and Maersk Tankers have reported that they are in the process of developing next generation liquefied CO2 carriers to be ready for the market by 2015. As part of the Finncap project that captures CO2 from power plants in Finland, the new carriers will deliver and offload captured CO2 at the injecting wells in the North Sea.
Hyundai Heavy has already completed basic designs for semi-refrigerated and semi-pressurized CO2 carriers in cooperation with Maersk Tanker and also plans to develop multiple-use ships that can carry CO2 /LPG or CO2 /ammonia.
As more governments move to reduce greenhouse gas emission, Maersk estimates the global demand for CO2 carriers will increase and reach 380 vessels by 2020.
