German coaster ran aground off Bornholm

During the weekend the German owned coaster Ostenau ran aground close to Dueodde at the southern tip of Bornholm. Ostenau was on a voyage from Hamburg via the Kiel Canal to Klaipeda when it ran aground. The coaster managed to get off the ground by own power, but the grounding was discovered by Bornholms Marinedistrikt which ordered the vessel to stop for inspection. It turned out that none of the crew members were intoxicated. The captain explained that the grounding was caused by a combination of engine trouble and negligent watching. However, this explanation did not match the ships log and therefore the vessel was ordered to go to Rønne. At Rønne the captain was fined DKK 10,000 for not reporting the grounding and furthermore the owner Rederei Erwin Strahlmann was also fined. The grounding caused no leak or any pollution. The 3,710 DWT-Ostenau was built in 2002 is flying Antigua and Barbuda flag.
