The German port handled 1.1 million 20-foot equivalent units delivered by inland waterway vessels, trucks and freight trains in the six months to June 30.
“This shows that we have largely recovered from the 2009 crisis and have even come close to our 2008 record year,” said Erich Staake, chief executive of port operator Duisburger Hafen AG.
Total cargo traffic, including coal, iron and steel, which slumped during the 2009 recession, increased by seventeen percent to 13.2 million metric tons.
