Volga Shipping’s four-month freight traffic rise by 31% to 3m tons

The volume of cargo carried by Volga Shipping company in four months of navigation in 2010 amounted to 3 million tons, up 31% over the same period last year, the company’s press service said.

During the period, the company transported more than 1 million tons of sulfur, a 55-percent surge over the same period in 2009. The volumes transported rubble (from Russia’s Karelia) jumped as much as 2.2 times, to 592,000 tons. The company carried 214,000 tons of salt (from Ahtubinsk), up 75% year-over-year. The volume of other categories remained at the level of last year.

Volga Shipping Company, the oldest and one of four largest shipping companies of Russia, is part of Universal Cargo Logistics Holding, which also controls Sea Port of St. Petersburg, Tuapse, Taganrog Commercial Sea Port, the North-Western Shipping Company, as well as a number of other shipping and shipbuilding assets.

During last year’s navigation the Volga Shipping Company carried 4,5m tons of cargo and 359,000 passengers. Volga Shipping operates a fleet of 250 cargo and passenger ships.
