V. Ruksha: Transits via the NSR are economically sound for 50.000-100.000DWT ships

Transit traffic through the Northern Sea Route would be economically feasible for vessels with a deadweight of 50-100 tons, the AtomFlot press service quoted the Director of Atomflot Vyacheslav Ruksha as saying.

The delivery time from Murmansk to Shanghai en route the North Sea (6.600 n.m) is 22 days, versus 40 days while passing through the regular 11ths-mile route, via Suez Canal, saving as much as 20 days for shipments to Asia region.

Besides, Mr. Ruksha said, the alternative route allows a significant cost cut, as a 100.000dwt tanker consumes 55 tons of fuel oil a day (about $ 400 per ton). As a result, the transit en route the North Sea gives nearly $1 million of cost saving, plus, saves $250ths of transit fee charged at the Suez Canal.

An earlier report said the 100.000DWT SCF Baltika tanker laden with gas condensate had set sail from Murmansk to China on the North Sea Route. The Balitca tanker will be escorted by AtomFlot’s three icebreakers.
