A Norway bulker to sail via the North Sea Route, backed by Atomflot's icebreakers

The Norway bulk cargo carrier laden with iron ore concentrate leaves the port of Kirkenes, August 31, to follow on the North Sea Route, the Atomflot’s press service reports. The bulker will be backed by the Atomflot’s nuclear-powered icebreakers ensuring safe passage through the ice-covered area. Then the icebreakers should first transport specialists and equipment of the NP-38 research station and further to escort the Georg Ots ferry, heading for the Far East from the Baltic Sea.

According to Vladimir Popov, Deputy Chief of the Federal Service for Transport Supervision, the task to reanimate the Northern Sea Route for Russian primary products exports to the Asian market is quite clear and feasible.

"This first test voyage of Sovcomflot’s Baltika might show how we are technically prepared to implement it",  the press service quoted Vladimir Popov as saying.

An earlier report said the 100.000DWT SCF Baltika tanker laden with gas condensate had set sail from Murmansk to China on the North Sea Route. The Balitca tanker will be escorted by AtomFlot’s three icebreakers.
