The 20.7 percent year-to-year increase marked the eighth straight month of double-digit growth in volume at the Georgia Ports Authority’s Savannah terminals. Although the increase was lighter than the 34.2 percent gain Savannah saw in June, July's TEU volume was 4.5 percent better than June's traffic. Last year, the port’s container volume fell 9.9 percent to 2,356,574 TEUs.
The GPA said its overall cargo tonnage last month was 2.2 million tons, up 15.6 percent from July 2009.
“Global demand for vessel space and equipment availability remains strong in most markets with demand outpacing available capacity,” said Curtis Foltz, the port authority’s executive director. “However, current projections for continued strong activity into the third quarter are less certain, as we move out of this year’s upcoming holiday shopping. We continue to be cautiously optimistic.”
At the GPA’s Port of Brunswick, the movement of auto and machinery units also averaged double-digit growth for the past eight months. The Colonel’s Island Terminal at Brunswick moved 35,789 total units in July, an 89.3 percent increase from a year earlier. Breakbulk volume at Brunswick rose 25.4 percent.
