The Kobe municipal government did not give container numbers in trade with individual countries.
Kobe is Japan’s fourth-largest container port after Tokyo, Yokohama and Nagoya. Among the nation’s five major international ports, which also include Osaka, Kobe became the last to release cargo figures for the whole of 2011.
The five major Japanese international ports reported mixed foreign trade container cargo results for last year. Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka posted rises of 8.6 percent, 3.2 percent and 9.8 percent, respectively, while Yokohama posted a decline of 6.2 percent.
In terms of volume, Kobe handled about 49.29 million tons of cargo, both containerized and noncontainerized, in foreign trade in 2011, up 3.1 percent from a year earlier. Exports totaled 22.20 million tons, down 0.9 percent, while imports amounted to 27.10 million tons, up 6.7 percent.
In trade with the United States, Kobe handled 7.54 million tons of cargo, both containerized and noncontainerized, in 2011, up 4.6 percent from a year earlier. Exports were up 0.8 percent at 2.50 million tons, while imports were up 6.5 percent at 5.04 million tons.
