Hanjin to launch Vietnam-US direct service from June 21

Korea's Hanjin Shipping has announced it will launch a service between Vietnam and the US on June 21 with the departure of a ship from Malaysia's Port Kelang.
The SJX (South East & Japan Express) will target the Vietnamese and south east Asian markets, which have shown steady growth despite the downturn, said a statement from the company.
Hanjin Shipping said by adding SJX calling Ho Chi Minh City to its current HES (Haiphong Express Service) offering, it will be able to provide customers a more stable service to the economic centres of Vietnam.
Ho Chi Minh City's new container terminal at Cai-Mep is a deep water port close to the sea, which can accommodate mega-ships if tidal restrictions are mitigated by timely vessel operation, said the company.
With six of 4,000-TEU ships deployed, SJX service will be calling at Port Kelang, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shenzhen (Yantian) Osaka, Tokyo, Long Beach, Oakland, Tokyo and Port Kelang, and from July 7, Hong Kong will be replaced by Ho Chi Minh City, said the company.
In addition, as SJX is calling the Japanese ports, the existing CAX (China America Express) will be omitting the Japanese ports, which will reduce the transit time from Shanghai and Busan to the US.
"Meanwhile, Hanjin will continue to rationalise existing services while developing new ones to cope with the market situations and cargo demands," said a company statement.
The rotation on the SJX (South-East & Japan Express) will be Port Kelang, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shenzhen (Yantian) Osaka, Tokyo, Long Beach, Oakland, Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Port Kelang. And from July 7, Port Kelang, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Shenzhen (Yantian), Osaka, Tokyo, Long Beach, Oakland, Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong and Port Kelang
On the HES (Haiphong Express Service), the port rotation will be Busan (New Port/Gamman), Shanghai, Haiphong, Shanghai and Busan (New Port/Gamman). The two vessels deployed will be of the 600-TEU class.
On the CAX (China America Express), the existing old rotation is Shanghai, Busan, Osaka, Tokyo, Long Beach, Oakland and back to Busan. But the new route will be Shanghai, Busan, Long Beach, Oakland and back to Busan
Hanjin is Korea's largest carrier that operates some 60 liner and tramper services, moving 100 million tons of cargo a year. Its fleet consists of 200 containerships, bulk and LNG carriers. The company is worth KRW6 trillion (US$4.7 billion) and earning KRW9 trillion annually.
