IHI awarded gas turbine power plant full turnkey project near Port Hedland
IHI Corporation and IHI Engineering Australia Pty. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of IHI, have been jointly awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) full turnkey contract for a LM6000*1 gas turbine power plant comprising 2 Units of Combined Cycle and 1 unit of Simple Cycle from TransAlta Energy Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of TransAlta Corporation, the company said in its press release.
The gas turbine power plant will be constructed near Port Hedland in the northern part of Western Australia. The electricity generated by the plant will be supplied to Horizon Power and to The Pilbara Infrastructure Pty Ltd. under Power Purchase Agreements with TransAlta.
With increasing sensitivity to environmental challenges, gas turbines are becoming the technology of choice as they are powered by natural gas and produce significantly less CO2 emissions compared to coal and oil fired power plants. Derived from jet engines used in aircraft, IHI’s LM6000 gas turbine, the core engine in the project, generates the highest output and efficiency of all IHI’s gas turbine product lineup.
IHI has secured orders for 76 units of LM6000 worldwide, comprising 46 units in Japan and 30 units outside Japan (including 16 units in Australia).
