In early March, the Fiege Group, together with an investment company, laid the foundation stone for an 84,000 m2 distribution centre in Neuss. Minister-president Rüttgers of North Rhine-Westphalia, the federal state that had a few weeks before unveiled its logistics policy for the coming years, was present (MvH: niet vertalen : zie and verwijzen naar bericht over het "Konzepts zur Entwicklung der Wasserstraßen und Häfen"). In line with this, he promised to improve rail links with the North Sea ports.
Fiege, which is among the larger German logistics service providers, is still looking for clients to occupy about half of the Rhine-Ruhr logistics centre. The centre will cost in the region of € 80 million.
In the same week, Garbe Logistics started work on the construction of five distribution sheds in Duisburg-Rheinhausen. These will have a total surface area of 48,000 m2, 7700 m2 of which will be refrigerated. The investment involved is in the region of € 45 million. The sheds are being built 'on spec', which means that tenants still need to be found for them.
There are 28 inland shipping and 19 rail services a week between Rotterdam and Duisburg. The frequency with Neuss is 10 and 5 respectively.
