Santos Brasil turned to the equipment manufacturer yet again for its productive stacking solutions citing the excellent and reliable performance of its Kalmar RTGs already in operation. The Port currently employs five conventional hydraulic RTGs delivered in early 2006 and nine all-electric E-One machines delivered in early 2008 with three units currently in the assembly phase, all from Kalmar.
Mr. Caio Morel Correa, Administrative Director of Santos Brasil S/A, comments on the latest order: "Kalmar has proved to us time and time again that it is a reliable supplier of innovative container handling equipment. As the largest terminal operator in the country, Santos Brasil's performance standard is equal to none, yet we are continuously pleased with the efficient delivery and operation of Kalmar equipment.
"It's important to also mention the reliable, skilled service support we receive from Kalmar Brasil, which keeps our machines running around the clock."
The port operator has again opted for RTGs featuring Kalmar's 16-wheel design. This model offers a reduction in ground load pressure over the traditional eight-wheel model, thus minimizing wear and tear on the terminal surface.
According to the new agreement, Kalmar's productivity-enhancing software, Smartrail(r), will not only apply to the new units, but it will also be retrofitted to Santos Brasil's five other-branded RTGs.
Furthermore, Santos Brasil has sought assistance with operator training in the 24-month rental of Kalmar's RTG simulator, helping to assure the terminal's safe and efficient operation.
Since 2000, Kalmar has supplied Santos Brasil with reliable equipment including several Kalmar reachstackers and empty container handlers.
Desiring more capacity and a faster, more productive operation, Santos Brasil has been aggressively updating its handling equipment by implementing RTGs, which offer higher density container stacking. All this, combined with the construction of a third docking berth and the modernization of its warehouse facilities, has afforded Santos Brasil its best performance yet by handling more than 1.2 million TEU in 2007.
