Scotland adds to Duisburg-Manchester intermodal railfreight service

After just one month of operating its intermodal train service running between Duisburg in Germany to Manchester in the UK, EWS, part of the DB Schenker organisation, has announced it will add a new Scottish connection.
This European intermodal rail freight service has now been expanded with a connection to existing EWS intermodal services from Manchester to Grangemouth in Scotland.
The rail service is unique for intermodal customers as it avoids any delays in short sea ports, providing a reliable Day A to Day B connection between Duisburg and Manchester with an onwards link to Scotland.
Duisburg is strategically important for British businesses, as it is the central logistics hub for the industrial heartland of Europe, not only allowing access to the German market, but also connecting with feeder services from Austria, Italy, Switzerland and the increasing flow of goods from the Middle and Eastern European countries and Russia.
The service, which operates Tuesdays to Saturdays, accepts containers up to 9ft 6in, with a maximum gross weight of 36 tonnes. This compares with a limit of 22 tonnes per container being moved by road from Duisburg to Britain.
EWS will introduce shortly additional intermodal train services between Basel to Manchester, and Milan to Manchester. These services will also connect with feeder services from Manchester to Scotland.
