In Jan-Mar 08, the port of Kotka handled 2.5 million tonnes of cargo (excluding containers and ro-ro cargo), a 7-percent increase year-on-year, PortNews IAA learnt from the company. In March, the port’s throughput totaled 1.03 million tonnes. Transshipment of export cargo amounted to 1.4 million tonnes in January-March 2008 (-11.6%, year-on-year). Transshipment of sawn timber fell by 36.6%, general cargo – by 21.4%, granite – by 11.0%, paper and cardboard – by 12.4%, while transshipment of cellulose and scrap metal grew by 13.3% and 211.2% respectively. Transshipment of import cargo grew by 38.6% to 523,400 tonnes. Transshipment of kaolin fell by 2.6%, oil- by 17.5%, while transshipment of round timber grew by 114.2% to 219,500 tonnes. The volume of transit cargo handled by the port totaled 585,900 tonnes (+29%, year-on-year).
In the reported period, container throughput totaled 124,304 TEU (+11.8%, year-on-year) which made 991,200 tonnes. Transshipment of ro-ro cargo fell by 7% to 6,777 units.
