Russian Railways up loading by 5.3% to 4.2 million tonnes in Q1 08

In January-March, 2008, Russian Railways (RZD OJSC) increased loading by 4.1%, year-on-year, to 4.2 million tonnes, RZD President Vladimir Yakunin announced today.

"Daily loading grew by 4.1%, year-on-year, while considering one extra day of this year the result climbed by 5.3%," Mr. Yakunin said.

In the first quarter average daily loading of coal grew by 7.2%, year-on-year; construction materials – by 12%, containerized cargo – by 10%.

According to Mr. Yakunin, the results should be attributed to a more efficient use of the rolling stock and to improvement of the infrastructure’s capacity.

In the reported period, the company’s passenger turnover grew by 1.1%, year-on-year.
