Container Terminal Dortmund to be expanded

In 2007, the Container Terminal Dortmund (CTD) in the eastern Ruhr handled a third more containers and other cargo units, calculated in TEU, than in 2006: 200,700 as opposed to 149,000.
Since December 2007, the terminal has been served three times a week by its own rail shuttle link with the port of Rotterdam. Operator Optimodal offers the destination five times a week. There is also a twice weekly inland shipping connection with Rotterdam.
Given the increasing demand, the terminal is to get a third portal crane, which will be operational in November. The rail and crane tracks will be extended and the capacity of the entrances and exits for trucks will be doubled.
In addition to the terminal, there are three locations (35,000 m2) for the storage of empty containers. CTD is concentrating on increasing the storage possibilities for both full and empty containers. Now that the sea terminals are restricting the time containers spend in the port, there is a growing need for capacity in the hinterland.
