Throughput of port Riga up 20.5% to 6.99 million tonnes in Q1 08

In January-March, the port of Riga increased its throughput by 20.5%, year-on-year, to 6.99 million tonnes, the port’s materials read. In the reported period, transshipment of lose cargo amounted to 4.633 million tonnes (+37.5%) including 3.289 million tonnes of coal (+ 42.9%), 472,000 tonnes of mineral fertilizers (+ 2.3%), 240,600 tonnes of wood chips (+ 21.6%). Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 1.178 million tonnes (+1.4%) including 1.168 million tonnes of oil products (+ 1%), 9,500 tonnes of liquefied gas. Transshipment of general cargo fell by 7.1% to 1.187 million tonnes including 425,200 tonnes of containerized cargo (+8.4%), 556,100 tonnes of timber (- 20.8%). In 2007, the port’s throughput grew by 2.3%, year-on-year, to 25.933 million tonnes.

Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava (Zapadnaya Dvina). The port’s total territory is 6,348 hectares. The length of its berths is 13,818 meters. Maximum permissible vessel draft by the berth – 12.2 metres. The port’s annual capacity is 45 million tonnes of cargo.
