Ukraine’s Ministry of Transport proposes privatization of two state shipping companies

Josef Vinski, Ukraine’s Minister of Transport and Communications thinks it is necessary to privatize state-owned Black Sea Shipping Company and Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company OJSC, Odessa information web-site informs. According to the minister the proposal has been already provided to the Cabinet of Ministers. He thinks the issue is to be solved by the end of the current year.
 
Black Sea Shipping Company was founded in 1833. As of today the company owns only two vessels (down from 300 in 1991). In September 2003 the company was declared a bankrupt.

State-owned Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company is a national carrier of cargo and passengers within the Danube Basin and one of the largest transport companies in Europe. In 2005, the company’s vessels entered the Rhine and the Caspian Sea. The company’s fleet has nod been upgraded for almost 15 years. In 2006, the company’s loss totaled UAH 53.1 million.
