The Russian Navy will fight pirate attacks on civilian ships in different parts of the world, Navy Commander-in-Chief Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky has told Interfax.
"Our ships, their crews and cargos need protection. The recent seizure of the tugboat Svtizer Korsakov with Russian crewmembers off the coast of Somalia confirms that," he said.
"The convoy and rescue functions of naval ships remain in demand the same as their involvement in the protection of offshore fields of minerals, peacemaking and peacekeeping operations, the observance of the nonproliferation mode," the admiral said. "The growing number of pirate attacks on Russian and foreign ships confirm the correctness of the policy of the Russian military leadership to resume the presence of Russian warships in all oceans, especially in areas of intensive fishing and shipping," he said.
