New Texas terminal receives first tanker

The new $1 billion Freeport LNG import terminal on the Texas Gulf Coast received its first tanker load of liquefied natural gas on Tuesday.
Janet Faz, spokeswoman for the new facility, announced the arrival of the Excelsior, which is scheduled to begin unloading its cargo on Thursday to prepare Freeport for its commercial start-up before June 1.
Excelsior's LNG cargoes were loaded in Nigeria.
Freeport, capable of sending up to 1.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day to the market, is one of three new US LNG import facilities receiving first cargoes this month.
The other two new US terminals nearing operation are Sabine Pass LNG, 100 miles northeast of Freeport in Louisiana; and Northeast Gateway, offshore of Boston, Massachusetts.
ConocoPhillips has reportedly bought two-thirds of Freeport's total capacity.
According to Reuters, Denver 'oilman' Michael Smith owns 45% of the terminal while Cheniere Energy holds a 30% stake. Dow Chemical Co.'s wholly owned subsidiary, Texas Holdings, owns a further 15% of the facility, with Japan's Osaka Gas Co Ltd taking up the remaining 10% shareholding.
