Salvors evacuate stricken boxship in New Zealand
Crew have evacuated from the stricken boxship Rena off New Zealand as weather conditions worsened today, Seatrade Asia online reports. Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) said the vessel was moving around in the weather conditions but remained intact, but heavy fuel oil continued to leak from the boxship. “The ship has sustained some damage from current movements and there is a significant amount of oil leaking from the vessel. This is estimated at 130 - 350 tonnes,” MNZ said.
All personnel were taken off the vessel after a Mayday was sent as precaution to expedite removal of the crew as weather worsened. “The weather in the area of the ship is poor, with 3 - 4m swells and winds of 20 -25 knots,” the New Zealand authorities said.
